How It Works

1

Tell Us What Needs to Be Served

Call (805) 941-1113 to discuss your documents, the person or entity to be served, the address, and any time or manner-of-service requirements. We confirm California Code of Civil Procedure compliance and provide a flat-fee quote upfront — no surprises.

2

We Make Multiple Service Attempts

Our process server makes multiple attempts at the address on different days and at different times. We serve at the residence, place of business, and any other address you provide. After every attempt you receive a status update by phone or email.

3

Proof of Service Filed

After successful service we prepare a proof of service (Personal Service or Service by Mail) documenting the date, time, location, and identity of the person served — ready to file with the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court or Santa Barbara County Superior Court, or return to you for filing.

Important: We are an attorney-supervised paralegal service, not a law firm. We cannot provide legal advice about whether service is required in your case, the timing of service, the contents of your court documents, or whether substituted service is appropriate for your matter. We serve documents at your specific direction in compliance with California law. Consult a licensed California attorney for legal advice on your case.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a process server cost in San Luis Obispo County or Santa Barbara County?+

Flat-fee pricing, no hidden charges. Service within the Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo limits starts at $75 per person. Surrounding Central Coast service areas are quoted case-by-case based on distance, access, and difficulty. We provide a flat-fee quote upfront before any work begins — call (805) 941-1113 for pricing on your specific service.

Can you serve papers same-day on the Central Coast?+

Yes, in most cases. Same-day service is available in Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, and Santa Maria for an additional rush fee. We typically complete emergency service within 4–6 hours during business hours. Call (805) 941-1113 to confirm same-day availability for your location.

What if the person is hard to find or avoids service?+

We make multiple service attempts on different days and at different times of day — morning, afternoon, and evening. When standard attempts are unsuccessful, we offer skip-trace and stake-out service to locate individuals and complete service. We also serve businesses by handing documents to a person in charge during business hours as permitted by law.

Do you serve papers in Lompoc, Goleta, Nipomo, and outlying areas?+

Yes. We routinely serve process in Lompoc, Goleta, Nipomo, Morro Bay, Atascadero, Paso Robles, and other outlying SLO County and Santa Barbara County communities. Travel fees apply for out-of-area services — we provide an exact quote before dispatching the server. No surprises.

What is a Proof of Service and do I need one?+

A Proof of Service is a signed declaration by the process server stating the date, time, location, and identity of the person served. It is the legal document that proves to the court your documents were properly delivered. Without a valid Proof of Service the court will not enter judgment or proceed with your case — it is not optional.

Can you serve someone at work or only at home?+

California allows service at the person's residence, place of business, or usual mailing address (other than a U.S. Postal Service mailbox). We serve at all three — wherever is most likely to achieve successful service in the fewest attempts — as permitted under CCP §§ 415.10–415.40.

Why a Local Central Coast Process Server Beats a National Service

National process server chains route jobs to independent contractors you’ve never met, often hundreds of miles from the Central Coast. They charge per mile, mark up court filing fees, and quote same-day service that takes three days. Their servers don’t know the Central Coast — they don’t know that Pismo Beach courts have different filing windows than Santa Barbara, that Nipomo straddles the SLO-Santa Barbara county line, or that Paso Robles is a 45-minute haul from the coast with its own courthouse to navigate.

We’re different. Stuart Legal has a real presence in Arroyo Grande. Our process server lives and works in the same community, drives the same roads every day, and knows every shortcut from San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara. We quote flat fees, dispatch the same day, and file your Proof of Service with the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court or Santa Barbara County Superior Court as part of our service. No subcontractors. No per-mile surcharges. No surprises.

That’s the difference between a contractor and a neighbor. When you call (805) 941-1113, you reach someone who actually lives in your community — and is accountable to it.
